Trevi Fountain in Rome Italy

(Fontana di Trevi) The Trevi Fountain is one of Rome's best-loved sights - an over the top, Baroque extravaganza of ancient sea gods and gushing water out of all proportion to the tiny piazza, at the meeting point of tre vie (three streets). It marks the site of one of Rome's earliest fountains, and was constructed in 1732-62 as mostra (show), following the ancient Roman custom of decorating the spot where water emerged with a great fountain.

The Trevi water - from the Aqua Vergine is reputedly Rome's sweetest; however, the 'tossing of the coin into the fountain' has superseded the rite of drinking it, to assure your return to the Eternal City.

Nicola Salvi, using a wall of Palazzo Poli as a backdrop, designed the fountain. Entire houses had to be torn down to make room for the monumental construction, which followed the popular marine mythology of the age: a massive figure of Neptune (framed by a triumphal arch) riding a sea-shell drawn by conch blowing tritons and seahorses splashing their way out of the fountain - the rearing steed symbolizes the ocean in turmoil and the calm one its tranquillity. Two figures representing Health and Abundance look on from the side niches and the carved panels above depict the discovery of the Acqua Vergine in 19bc, apparently revealed to Roman soldiers by a virgin.

The end result is so much like a stage-set that later architects added rows of seats from which to admire Rome's most sensational fountain. If, by day, you find it rather too crowded for enjoyment, return by night when spotlights play magically on the newly cleaned marble and gushing water, making it one of the most delightful corners of Rome.
