History of Gambassi Terme in the Elsa Valley near Florence

In the Early Middle Ages, a castle was erected between 1037 and 1115. In the second half of the 12th century (around 1172), a second castle was erected near the inhabited hill where the rural comunity organized.

The new castle became part of the San Gimignano area, which caused protests by the bishop of Volterra. The crisis erupted into an open conflict in 1275, and was resolved by negotions in 1280.

In 1293, after making peace with Fucecchio, Gambassi became Florentine dominion. The comunity of Gambassi was annexed to Montaione with the Leopold Reformation in 1774, and detatched itself to become autonomous only in 1917.

Since 1977, its name has been “Gambassi Terme”, in order to underline the importance of its precious hot springs which flow from Pillo, where the imposing Villa Incontri stands amid its evocative park.

The salty sodium bicarbonate alcaline earthy waters of Pillo boast important therapeutical qualities, making the most of in the modernly equipped thermal facilities in Gambassi, on which the turistic success of the area depends. In fact, in recent years many farmhouses have become agriturism appartments or comfortable summer residences.
