Province of Carrara, Massa Carrara, Tuscany
Carrara is the world capital of marble and the centre of the marble industrial sector. It is situated on the Ligurian Sea and it is in the North-West part of Tuscany.
Together with Massa, it gives the name to the province of Massa-Carrara, which spreads from the sea to the Apuan Alps, in the south it borders Versilia (province of Lucca), in the east, in the north Reggio Emilia and Parma, in north-west La Spezia.
The city, well known at international level for its white marble quarries, is situated in a key point of transports that make the city easy to reach.
Many of the mountain villages of Carrara, in the past based their economy on the agricultural – pastoral activity, for example Castelpoggio. Other villages such as Colonnata, Torano and Bedizzano, instead, based their economy on marble extraction. Particularly, Bedizzano, that in the sixteenth century was the summer residence of the Cybo Malaspina Family, shows a unique city image. In the valley the most ancient city is Avenza.
