Gonzaga Museum, Novallara, Emilia Romagna
The Museum was created in the sixties and is dedicated to the Gonzaga family, who ruled Novellara between 1335 and 1728.
It is housed in the upper floor of the Rocca (Castle), in the 16th-century apartment of the Counts where there are still visible traces of frescoes and beautiful marble fireplaces.
The Museum holds, among other things, fragments of Romanesque-Byzantine frescoes, portraits of the Gonzaga family of Novellara, frescoes by Lelio Orsi from the Casino di Sopra residence, coins from the local mint, and an exceptional collection of pharmacy vases dating back to the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, temporarily transferred to an annexe of the Theatre.
The pharmacy Vases of the Jesuit Monks:
The collection consists of approximately one hundred pieces and is considered to be one of the richest and most valuable collections of its kind today.
It contains majolica jars, bottles, jugs, and richly decorated decanters (attributed to glass workshops in the Veneto region). Most of the vases carry a scroll describing the substances they contain. The four large vases and eleven medium-sized vases made in Lodi in 1740 are decorated with historical scenes of sacred or mythological character.
