Destination: DUMBEA: Dumbéa Dam
This dam provides Noumea with its drinking water. Constructed in 1953, it replaced a dam dating from 1880 whose remains can still be seen at a lower level. The medium flow of the Dumbea River was chosen at a place known as « Les Barbouilleurs ». At that period, the Municipal Council opted for an arched dam which allowed for a residue of 300 000m3 of usable water.
This dam was raised by 3.5m in 1972 increasing the water reservoir to 650 000m3. The new dam forms the boundary for a 57 km² basin which provides a interesting and pleasant walkway for the inhabitants of Noumea.
